Mayor Sara Duterte warns Iglesia Ni Cristo amid COVID-19 outbreak: “Praying inside the church will not save you from the virus”

Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte warned Iglesia ni Cristo after she got informed that the religious sect is not following the executive order that she signed as a measure to fight COVID-19.

Duterte signed the executive order no. 10, which includes the suspension of all religious activities in Davao City.

The irritated Mayor on a statement reminded that the members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo are could also be infected by the virus even if they continue to go inside their church to worship.

“We already told you through an executive order that all religious ceremonies should be suspended. I want to remind members of Iglesia Ni Cristo that praying inside the church will not save you from the virus. It will not prevent you from getting infected and from getting sick,” ani Duterte.

The presidential daughter warned that if INC ignores her request, she’s going to do any legal move to force them to obey the executive order.

“If we cannot appeal to INC to suspend their activities, then we are exploring what we can do on the legal side,”

Duterte then asked the members of Iglesia ni Cristo to avoid doing their religious activities for a while.

Iglesia Ni Cristo members are known for always attending their ceremonies every week.

“I ask our brothers and sisters from the INC in Davao to please stop attending your ceremonies,” Duterte said.

Even on social media, some INC members said that no one could stop them from attending their worship.

But some of them said that they’re following the social distancing measures.

“Walang anuman o sinoman, maka pipigil sa aming paglilingkod sa Diyos! Tuloy tuloy parin kami sa aming pagsamba sa gitna man ng pangamba na mga lumalaganap na sakit!
Kami ay mga Iglesia Ni Cristo!” Kriztoffer Kantoz said.

“INC has always been very supportive of the Government programs as long as it does not interfere with our faith, especially our freedom of worship,” Wally Cuarto stated.

“Kung may masamang mangyari sa amin tulad ng digmaan, baha, salot o taggutom, haharap kami sa TEMPLONG ITO upang humingi ng tulong sa iyo sapagkat dito ka sinasamba, tatawag kami sa iyo, papakinggan mo kami at ililigtas sa panahon ng aming kagipitan. (2 Cronica 20:9) BMBB” he added.

Iglesia ni Cristo is not yet releasing a statement on the request of the Davao City Mayor.

 

 

President Rodrigo Duterte arrives at MacArthur Highway to check the stranded commuters amid Luzon community quarantine

Despite the dangers of being infected by COVID-19, President Rodrigo Duterte arrived in the boundary of Valenzuela-Meycauayan along MacArthur highway to check the condition of the stranded commuters who were caught by the start of the community quarantine of Luzon.

In a video posted by GMA News, Duterte was shown arriving without wearing a face mask, and his only protection against COVID-19 are the members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) who are ensuring that no one is going to get near the President.

Duterte went there to order the military and the police to let the stranded people pass the checkpoint.

According to some reports, some workers became stranded since 12 AM, the time when the Luzon community quarantine became effective.

Around 1:30 AM, Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian also went to the checkpoint to ask the Meycauayan Chief of Police to let the people stranded to go home.

However, it seems that the Mayor failed to convince the cops.

Thousands of passengers are still stranded in different places in Metro Manila because of the community quarantine in Luzon.

According to the recent order of the government, all mass transportation in Luzon should stop during the quarantine period, that’s why many passengers who are residing in provinces but working in Metro Manila were trapped inside the nation’s capital.

Aside from stopping mass transportation, the government also ordered all establishments to close down except banks, hospitals, groceries, pharmacies and other businesses that providing the basic needs to the people.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development was also ordered to distribute food assistance to residents in Luzon who will be most affected by the quarantine.

Joma Sison to “study” President Duterte’s ceasefire offer: “If you want a ceasefire you must make a formal offer”

The National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) saying that they’re not going to accept President Rodrigo Duterte’s ceasefire offer as they still need to study it.

On a statement, NDFP’s chief political consultant Jose Maria Sison said that they’re skeptical with Duterte’s offer, saying that they’re receiving reports that the increasing presence of military and police amid the community quarantine period in Luzon may also be used against them and not just against COVID-19.

He cited that Duterte ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to finish off the New People’s Army before his term ends as one of the reasons why they’re being careful of accepting the President’s offer.

However, Sison said that they can still be convinced to have a temporary peace with the government forces if Duterte is going to offer the ceasefire formally.

“But if he is really serious with his offer to have a ceasefire with the NDFP he must make a formal offer through the GRP (Government of the Republic Philippines) negotiating panel to the NDFP negotiating panel,” Sison said.

“The offer will be seriously studied by the NDFP and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). It will be related not only to the common fight against Covid-19 but also to the resumption of the peace negotiations,” he added.

Sison also expected that the NDFP is going to demand something to the Philippine government like lessening their spending to their military.

“In my view, the NDFP will certainly demand that the GRP realign government spending from excessive military spending and from rampant corruption in order to pursue genuine land reform and national industrialization and expand social services, especially public health and education,” he said.

“The NDFP will demand that the public funds be poured into the effort to fight Covid-19 so that there will be adequate health workers, facilities, equipment and medicines for the purpose,” he added.

He said that while they’re still not accepting the ceasefire offer of the President, NPA should still be on alert and ready themselves from possible offensive from the AFP.

On Monday, President Duterte made the said offer, explaining that NPA should help the government in fighting COVID-19.

“Ceasefire muna tayo. Mas mabuti pang tumulong muna kayo. I will repay you with a good heart,” he said.

 

“Baka pwede naman?” Jim Paredes urges ABS-CBN to air educational shows for children amid COVID outbreak

OPM artist Jim Paredes urged ABS-CBN to air educational children shows after the broadcasting network announced that they’re going to suspend teleserye productions and live shows because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paredes made the said suggestion via Twitter, requesting that shows like Sineskwela, Hiraya Manawari and Bayani should make a comeback on television.

“Dear @ABSCBNNews #AbsCbn baka pwede naman na magre-run din kayo sa free TV nung mga educational TV shows ninyo. Nasa bahay lang mga bata. One month of Sineskwela, Hiraya, Bayani will do them good,” Paredes said.

The said shows educated children during the 90s and received numerous awards.

ABS-CBN owned Knowledge Channel then responded to Paredes request, informing the artist that they’re already airing the said shows every day.

“Hi, sir! Sa Knowledge Channel po ay patuloy ipinapalabas ang mga shows na ito araw-araw. At ngayon pong mas madalas nasa bahay ang mga bata, maganda kung mapapanood nila ang ating favorite 90’s educational shows. Available rin po ito sa aming Youtube channel,” Knowledge Channel told Paredes.

Paredes followers also agree with the artist’s suggestion.

“I will agree to this. Ung every morning un ang mppnuod kesa mga drama na about sa kabit at panloloko,” netizen @DaLonelyDragon said.

“I agree. Given the class suspensions + the move of TV networks to put all live telecasts / program tapings on hold, children and young adults now have an opportunity to watch those EDUCATIONAL TV SHOWS of old that taught actual VALUES and KNOWLEDGE,” netizen @kikorustia remarked.

On March 15, ABS-CBN suspended the staging of live entertainment shows and tapings of teleseryes to protect their employees from being infected by COVID-19.

However, they assured that they’re still going to continue their broadcast operations to update the public.

Televiewers are going to expect to watch replays.

Angel Locsin on community quarantine: “Kung matitiyak lang po sana ng ating pamahalaan na may financial support para sa kanila”

Actress Angel Locsin shared her thoughts on the effects of the community quarantine imposed by the government on the working-class Filipinos.

On a Facebook post, Locsin said that people were forced to go outside despite fears of having COVID-19 because they’re still required to work for their daily needs.

According to her, people are not going outside of their homes anymore if the government could only assure that they’re going to get sufficient financial support during the whole period of the community quarantine.

She also suggested suspending the due date of utility bills and bank loans without any additional interest or penalties imposed on their consumers.

Locsin also hoped that the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) is going to shoulder the expenses of possible COVID-19 patients.

Before ending her post, she also thanked the front-liners of COVID-19.

She also posted several photos taken on Monday during the second day of the community quarantine, showing how people are facing inconvenience and were forced to disregard social distancing because of lack of public transporation.

Thousand of Filipino workers were affected by the community quarantine being imposed by the government in Metro Manila.

Recently, President Duterte already asked the private companies to help its workers by giving them their 13th-month pay earlier or half of their monthly salary.

“Wala munang putulan!” Meralco, Globe, Smart and other companies to implement ‘pay date extension’ amid COVID-19 oubreak

Several utility companies decided to implement a ‘pay date suspension’ to all their customers amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines.

Some companies like Meralco, PLDT, Smart, and Maynilad decided to help their customers by letting them enjoy their services without being worried to get disconnected during the period of the outbreak.

Some banks like RCBC and Eastwest also decided to extend the payment due dates for auto, personal, mortgage, credit card and other kinds of loans for 30 days.

Despite the payment date extension, customers are still allowed to pay their bills this month if they’re not having financial problems due to COVID-19.

President Rodrigo Duterte and former Senator Bongbong Marcos recently asked the companies for a one-month payment extension of bills.

Aside from the Philippines, countries like Italy already implemented already implemented pay date suspension.

However, some netizens still complained about the decision of the utility companies and banks.

Netizen @helixmosquera questioned why the companies only gave pay date extension to its customers while businesses in other countries are giving one-month free service to their clients.

Duterte to human rights advocates: “You encourage people to assert something na kunting bagay lang makikipag away sa pulis”

President Rodrigo Duterte asked the human rights advocates to tone down and avoid giving reasons to the public to argue with the police officials and soldiers who are enforcing the community quarantine in Metro Manila.

During the televised address Monday, Duterte said that it’s better to avoid encouraging the people to assert their rights especially during times of crisis.

“They go to the opposite side, sinasabing ‘yung mga pulis hindi kayo maaresto’ you know, you don’t have to say that eh you encourage people to assert something na kunting bagay lang makikipag away sa pulis,” Duterte said.

While it’s correct that police and soldiers cannot put any citizens under their custody, the President reminded the public that there’s a limit on having arguments with law enforcers.

“When you advised to go home and you grapple with the police with words and ultimately it comes to dalhin sa estasyon for a public disturbance or disobedience to lawful authority, pwede ka talagang dalhin sa estasyon,” the President said.

According to President Duterte, it’s fine for the public to be reminded about their rights during “ordinary times” but not during the times of crisis.

“Just to be heard, para lang marinig ka ng tao o makisawsaw ka, ayaw mo magpa iwan sa mga issue so gusto mong sumali rin para marinig ka na ‘o meron akong contribution’ wag mong ganunin ang tao, just say ‘obey’, o kapag sinabi mo na hindi ka pwedeng hulihin and then you are advised and you become a hot heat makipag tulakan ka sa pulis,” he said.

“May mga tao talaga na ayaw magpahuli, alam ng mga tao na bright kayo alam ninyo na bright kayo, mga tao lang pati kayo, hindi kami kasali, you seem to give a side comment that is not needed,” he added.

Duterte then insisted that the people should follow the government and not other people because only the executive department is tasked to handle the COVID-19 outbreak and not the critics of the government.

“Better that if you give an order, make it milder and more acceptable and not cause parang maiirita yung mga pulis at mga military,” Duterte said.

“Remember, this is an emergency, during an emergency tumabi kayong lahat and give it to the people who are responsible for protecting the country,” he added.

It can be remembered that defeated senatorial candidate Chel Diokno reminded the public that the cops cannot put them under their custody if they tried to disobey the community quarantine measures in Metro Manila.

“Pwede ka nilang harangin at papasukin, na tama lang naman kung kailangan,” Diokno said who’s reacting to a statement of NCRPO Chief Debold Sinas.

 

 

Duterte asks private companies to give workers their 13th month pay or half of their monthly salary amid COVID oubreak

President Rodrigo Duterte asked the private companies to consider the welfare of their workers who are affected by the community quarantine.

During a televised address, Duterte said that the big enterprises could give the 13th-month pay of their workers, or just give them half of their monthly salary in advance so they’re not going to worry about being jobless for 30 days.

“Yung malalaking enterprises dito, maybe you can consider paying the 13th month pay, or just paying them, maski kalahati sa sweldo nila, as a way of showing your solidarity with the Filipino.” Duterte said.

He also asked business tycoons like Manuel V. Pangilinan, Fernando Zobel de Ayala to help the government during COVID-19 outbreak.

“Mga mayayaman like for example Pangilinan and the Ayalas and sila Cuson you might be able to alleviate the situation just by understanding the plight of workers who are not working now,” the President said.

The President also announced that San Miguel Corporation and other food companies already assured the government that there will be sufficient food supply in the coming weeks.

One of the main concerns of the Filipinos during the community quarantine in Metro Manila is there where to get the money to buy food and other basic necessities for a month.

Even Senator Christopher “Bong” Go already asked the private companies for the early release of the 13-month pay.

“Kahit prorated lang, malaking tulong na iyan sa ating mga kababayan habang naka-community quarantine,” Go said.

He also urged the companies to allow their workers to go on leave or do work from home during the community quarantine period.

“Kung maaari, huwag na natin papasukin ang ating mga empleyado sa opisina lalo na kung kaya naman magampanan ang trabaho nila mula sa bahay sa pamamagitan ng teknolohiya,” he said.

Duterte also recently announced that he’s going to put the whole Luzon under ‘enhanced community quarantine’ until April 12 because there are already reported cases of COVID-19 in provinces outside Manila.

 

 

Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri announces that he’s positive for COVID-19: “This just goes to show how easily this virus is spread”

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri announced Monday that he tested positive for COVID-19 despite following social distancing and no handshake policy.

Zubiri announced the sad news on his Facebook page, saying that the Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Duque is the one who called him to inform that he’s now one of the hundreds of Filipinos who contracted the virus.

However, he told his followers that he’s not showing any COVID-19 symptoms which is a good news.

“To my dear fellow Filipinos, my Kababayans. It is with sadness that I announce that I am positive for Covid 19. I had a test taken last Friday while on self-quarantine and this afternoon I received a call from Sec. Duque on my condition,” Zubiri said.

“My heart sank with what he had said but I’m uplifted with the fact that I am asymptomatic and have no fever or cough nor am I weak or have any headaches,” he added.

The Senator also said that he still got the virus despite following the social distancing other ways that could prevent him from contracting the virus.

“As one of those very early on in the Senate who espoused and advocated for stronger Government response on controlling Covid 19, I was very careful in my dealings with people at work in the Senate. I practiced social distancing, as well as a no handshake policy but yet I, got contaminated. How I do not know. This just goes to show how easily this virus is spread and therefore it is best for everyone to stay home and stay clean,” he said.

Zubiri said that he’s going to isolate himself for 10 days before taking another test.

He also urged the people to follow the government and avoid going outside of their homes.

“As for me I will stay locked in isolation for 10 more days until I get checked once again with hopefully a negative result. I hope my coming out will show how dangerously infectious this virus is. Sa aking mga Kababayans, makinig po tayo sa mga babala nang Gobyerno at wag na po kayo lumabas sa inyong mga tahanan. God bless us all,”

Zubiri is the highest government official who became positive with COVID-19.

He’s one of the Senators who took the ‘precautionary’ quarantine on March 12 after a resource person who entered the senate premises tested positive for COVID-19.

 

Netizen writes touching open letter to critics of cops and soldiers: “Kahit hindi po kami pasalamatan, basta ipagdasal lang po niyo kami”

A netizen writes a touching open letter on social media amid the criticisms being received by the government after they tapped the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to enforce the community quarantine in the Philippines.

Netizen Julius Manalo explained that AFP and PNP are also doing other tasks aside from enforcing the law in the country.

According to him, soldiers and police are very important in assisting different organizations during times of crisis, saying that they’re that doing what the nurses and firefighters cannot do, that’s why the government decided to ask AFP and PNP to assist the health workers in fighting COVID-19.

Before he ended his post, Manalo only asked the netizens to pray for the COVID-19 front-liners because they’re also afraid of getting the virus.

Manalo made the said post after several groups, including Vice President Leni Robredo, questioned why the government became too focused on maintaining law and order amid the community quarantine period in Metro Manila.
