Gold medalist Eduard Folayang to critics of SEA Games: “Instead of boosting the athletes’ confidence, they might rather feel the negativity,”

Former mix martial artist champion and three-time Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist Eduard Folayang asked the netizens to stop criticizing the event because it might lower the confidence of our athletes.

In an interview with GMA News, Folayang pointed out that in every big sporting event even in abroad, there’s some problem being experienced by the athletes.

However, he pointed out that athletes are joining big sporting events to represent their country, and not to have a “vacation”.

“We’ve experienced some inconveniences ourselves. In my first SEA Games, there were things to complain about. Our bus was hot, and there was no air-conditioning. There will always be something to complain about,” said Folayang.

“As an athlete, you can’t afford to look for luxury. You cannot expect that. You’ll be lucky if given a good facility, but having inconveniences is part of being an athlete. You don’t go there for vacation, after all.” he added.

Folayang also explained that the negativities surrounding the 30th SEA Games might lose the winning mindset of the Filipino athletes.

“Instead of boosting our nationalism because we are the host country, some would rather focus on the negativity and shortcomings. There’s no such thing as a perfect SEA Games. Regardless of the host, there could be something to complain about,” he explained.

“My point is, being a SEA Games athlete myself, it is really good that we now have world-class facilities. But if we focus on the issues, then we’re really going nowhere. Instead of boosting the athletes’ confidence, they might rather feel the negativity,” he added.

“What if the athletes become complacent and tell themselves it’s OK to lose because of all the shortcomings? What happens if their mindset turns out to be that way?” he also said.

According to Folayang, there’s nothing wrong with criticizing the mistakes of the SEA Games, but there’s a right time for that and that is when the event is already over.

“To me, what’s important is we take care of our athletes. That’s what athletes want to feel because they represent the country. Let’s not forget the true purpose of SEA Games which is to boost our nationalism and develop unity,” Folayang stated.

“The criticisms can come later. There’s always something to see and criticize, but as much as possible, it is better if the criticisms happen in the right season,” he added.

Philippines labeled as ‘best SEA Games organizer’ by Sports Industry Awards Asia

Despite the criticisms received by the country last week because of some errors that occurred during the preparation of the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA) Games, an Asian award body labeled the Philippines as the “best organizer” of the said sporting event.

The Sports Industry Awards (SPIA) Asia has recognized the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) as the best organizer of the SEA Game, mentioning its efforts in handling the said event and organizing a world-class opening ceremony.

SPIA Asia is the region’s leading sports business conference and awards platform, recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the Asian sports industry for the past years.

It is known for being the most credible awards platform in Asia when it comes to celebrating the sports industry on the continent.

SPIA chief executive officer Eric Gottschalk personally awarded the trophy to Phisgoc chairman and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, Phisgoc chief operating officer Ramon Suzara during a conference in Grand Hyatt Hotel Tuesday.

Suzara said that the award given to them by SPIA would encourage them to work harder in the remaining days of the SEA Games.

This is the fourth time, the Philippines became the host country of the SEA Games.

As of posting time, the Filipino athletes have garnered a total of 109 medals — 54 golds, 36 silvers and 19 bronzes.

According to Silva, he’s happy for the hospitality shown by the Philippines to Timor-Leste.

“I am very happy for your help,” De Silva said who’s also the chef de mission of Timor-Leste for SEA Games.

Netizens pointed out that SEA Games is about unity and not about having competition with each other that’s why they’re also cheering for Timor-Leste to finally have a medal.

“I’m a Filipino by heart and soul… I support my Filipino Athletes.. but one thing that captures my heart, its the fighting spirits of Timor-Leste (East Timor) that really showcase the true sportsmanship even without the medals, I admire they’re desire and passion to still play continuously,” netizen Wilven Allere said.

President Duterte to Sen. Drilon after revealing “onerous” water deals: “Kung babagsak ako, dadalhin talaga kita”

President Rodrigo Duterte warned Senate Minority Floor Leader Franklin Drilon that he would face the consequences if he’s one of the politicians who favored the “onerous” contract between the government and water companies.

In his speech on Tuesday, Duterte revealed that Drilon already cautioned him on trying to revising the said contracts because the government might pay billions of pesos.

The incident made the President think if Drilon is one of the politicians who crafted the said contract.

Duterte said that he’s not afraid to clash with a very influential politician like Drilon if ever that he found out that the latter is involved in the contract.

“Ako wala akong (problema) kay Drilon. Pero I distinctly recall that Drilon said something, ‘President Duterte, do not tinker with that contract because we will end up paying so many billions of pesos’,” said Duterte.

“Senator Drilon, are you one of those who crafted the contract? I am asking you. I’m ready to go down. Hindi kita tinatakot. Pero kung babagsak ako, dadalhin talaga kita,” he added.

Duterte was disappointed after being informed about the contract signed by the government in 1997 between the government and Manila Water Co. and Maynilad Water Services.

According to him, the contract required the government to pay billions of pesos to the said water companies if they fail to reach their target profit.

He also warned the other politicians allegedly involved in supporting the water companies.

“Bakit pumayag ang mga Senador diyan?  Marami ‘yan sila, and we will expose them. And I will insist that they be tried for economic sabotage,” Duterte said.

Walang mawala sa akin,” he added.

According to the Department of Justice, the “onerous” deals cost the government P10.8-B.

President Duterte to Senators who favor “onerous contract” with Manila Water Co. and Maynilad: “Patikim ko sila paano ang buhay ng preso”

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday warned the senators behind the “onerous” contract signed in 1997 with water concessionaries that they would face cases for sabotaging the economy.

Duterte couldn’t hide his disappointment after being informed about the contracts between the government, Manila Water Co. and Maynilad Water Services.

According to the President, the contract entered by the government required them to pay fines if ever that the water companies losses a profit or the administration interfered with them.

“Pumasok tayo sa kontrata na distributor lang sila, but they were treating as if it was a mining gold or diamond, ang kontrata ay napaka tagilid na tagilid,” Duterte said.

“Because if they fail to realize the profit during the lifetime of the contract or in any period, babayad tayo nalugi nila, anak ng,” he added.

Duterte also pointed out that the government cannot do anything to lower or increase the rates of the water because of the said contract.

Recently, an International Court ordered the Philippine government to pay P7.4-B to Manila Water to cover the four-year losses of the company.

Duterte said that he’s planning to reveal the politicians favored the said contracts and file a case against them in the Supreme Court.

“Bakit pumayag ang mga Senador diyan?  Marami ‘yan sila, and we will expose them. And I will insist that they be tried for economic sabotage,” Duterte said.

Walang mawala sa akin,” he added.

The President said that he already tasked the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) to make a new contract and asked the water companies to sign it or else face charges.

“Ang daming pagkain!” Malaysian Sports official worries about the weight of their athletes because of so much “delicious” food being served

The deputy president of the Malaysian Athletics Federation Datuk Mumtaz Jaafar is complaining about the food being served to their athletes at them, not because it’s not being cooked well, but because it’s too delicious for them to resist.

In a report of the New Strait Times, Jaafar said that there are so many foods being served at Athlete’s Village in New Clark City and it made her worried about the weight of their athletes.

“We arrived three days before athletics start and, after looking at the mess hall, I’m worried that some of my athletes might over-indulge and put on extra weight,” said Jaafar.

“The food is delicious, even better than those served at some hotels… and it’s open 23 hours every day,” she added.

The room of the athletes is just walking distance from the dining hall where 35 Kapampangan chefs are cooking a different kind of halal foods to the athletes, six times a day.

“With the athletics venue across the road from the Village, I’m afraid they might have too much time in their hands and the mess hall might become the focal point,” she also said.

The athlete’s village has a total of 723 rooms, a gym, conference rooms, a lounge and a swimming pool aside from the big kitchen.

Several days ago, the organizers of SEA Games received criticisms from the netizens after a coach claimed that their athletes were served “kikiam”, a known street food for their breakfast.

Aside from the “kikiam” controversy, some media outlets also claimed that some Muslim athletes were served pork, however, the news was proven false.

Philippine High School for Sports to be built in New Clark City to give 6 year scholarship to sports prodigies

To ensure that the facilities built by the government for the 30th Southeast Asian Games will still going to be useful even after the said event, the government bared their plan to build a school for sports prodigies.

The government is planning to build the Philippine High School for Sports at the New Clark City in Tarlac to give a six-year scholarship for promising athletes that could represent the Philippines in big sports events.

Bases and Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) President Vince Dizon said that it’s already the right time for the government to build a school specializing in sharpening the talents of the athletes while studying at the same time.

“Right now, we have the Philippine Science High School, we have the Philippine High School for the Arts, but we don’t have a Philippine High School for Sports,” said Dizon.

According to Dizon, the Philippine High School for Sports is going to offer scholarships for six years with free lodging at the Athlete’s village in New Clark City.

“This is going to be a fully subsidized high school from junior to senior, where we will have scholars who will be recruited through the Philippine Sports Commission and from the Department of Education,” Vince explained.

“They are going to be our top age groupers for all the sports—athletics, aquatics, football, gymnastics, boxing, all these other sports. They will also have access to the facilities here,” he added.

They’re hoping that the Philippine High School for Sports is going to start its first class in 2021.

Senators Sherwin Gatchalian and Christopher “Bong” Go also expressed their support in building the Philippine High School for Sports.

“With the creation of the Philippine High School for Sports in very close proximity to world-class facilities…our student-athletes can enjoy a level of training which is at par with the best in the world,” Go said.

“This type of training and education can catapult our student-athletes to illustrious careers in sports, whether as athletes, coaches, managers, or any other sports-related profession,” he added.

Tulfo to Raissa Robles after the latter criticizes the SEA Games opening: “Bago ka pumuna ng kapangitan, tumingin ka muna sa salamin”

Journalist Erwin Tulfo criticized Raissa Robles for her comments against the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games opening ceremony calling her a ‘black sheep’.

In his radio program, Tulfo expressed disappointment over Robles’ criticisms, saying that many people made an effort to make the opening ceremony successful.

“You don’t have a right to be a critic, because we don’t see anything wrong with the presentation,” Tulfo said.

“Ginawa ang lahat ng magagawa at pinuri, Strait Times, Malaysia Times, Jakarta, etc. lahat sila sinabi yung kapalpalkan noong nakaraang linggo ay napawi o nabawi nung opening ng Southeast Asian games, ang ibig sabihin ng mga media na ito, maganda [yung opening ceremony],” he added.

Tulfo said that Robles’ should look at the mirror first before criticizing the opening ceremony of the SEA Games.

“Nahiya ako sa sarili ko, kailan pa ba Miss Raissa Robles na ikaw ay naging pambansang kritiko. Bago ka pumuna ng kapangitan ng kung ano-ano, marapat lang siguro na tignan mo muna sa salamin ang iyong mukha,” Tulfo told Robles.

He described the Duterte critic as ‘desperate’ and looking for attention even if the majority of the netizens don’t like her opinion.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioner Ramon Fernandez also reacted on the tweet of Robles, saying that the journalist have the right to express her opinion on the SEA Games opening ceremony.

“Iba lang siguro ang nasa ulo niya, saang probinsiya ba si Raissa? hindi natin siya masisisi,” Fernandez said.

Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Deputy Administrator Mocha Uson who also got interviewed by Tulfo described Robles as “hopeless”.

“Wala ng makitang maganda, ang tawag nga sa kanya ng ibang Pilipino ay alien, at hindi siya Pilipino,” said Uson.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISCOG) Spokesperson Atty. Jarie Osias don’t understand why Robles’ made such comments about the SEA Games ceremony.

“Kahit ako po ay tumindig ang balahibo ko, mayroon pang parte na naluha ako, at may parte po na nakikisayaw ako kasama ang Pangulo, so hindi ko po mawari ang basehan ng comment ni Miss Robles,” Osias said.

Tulfo also has a message to the critics of the government.

“Kung galit po kayo sa pangulo, wag niyo pong isama ang mga atleta, itong mga palaro, keep your mouth shut,” he said.

On November 30, Raissa Robles made her controversial about the SEA Games opening comparing it to a carnival.

“We have very good choreographers – Steve Villaruz, Edna Vida, Nonoy Ftoilan. They could have been tapped for the #SeaGamesOpening  Pucha. Parang nanunuod ka lang ng perya sa probinsiya nito. Why did they not use some of our ballet dancers??????” Robles twitted.

Sen. Zubiri assures no favoritism in judging athletes on SEA Games: “Walang lutong Macau dito!”

Senator Miguel Zubiri assured that the host country the Philippines is upholding its integrity in judging the athletes competing for the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

To prove that the judges are having fair with other competitors, Zubiri mentioned a case where a Filipino athlete was stripped of a victory in Arnis after the jurors reviewed the protest made by the camp of Cambodia.

After reviewing the fight carefully, the judges saw that the opponent of Yalong, Veannsonita Si, made more effective blows than the Filipino athlete.

“Lumapit sila sa akin and they wanted to question the result. Bilang host country, kailangang ipakita natin na patas tayo. We’re fair. Pati ako, nakita ko, medyo dehado yung ating atleta. So I said, ‘let’s take it to the jury’. I-replay natin yung fight. Mayroon tayong system, na kapag may protesta, iri-replay yung fight, bibilangin in slow motion. Unanimous, panalo yung taga-Cambodia,” said Zubiri.

According to Zubiri, Cambodia is “hesitating” to file a protest, however, the Senator encouraged them.

He pointed out that like the Filipino athletes, other nations also prepared for the 2019 SEA Games so they should be given fair treatment.

“I’m happy for them. Naghirap rin silang mag-training ng ilang buwan at pumunta dito. Ayaw kong sabihin nila na Lutong Macau ang Pilipinas. Walang Lutong Macau dito. Let’s take it as sportsmen and women. Kapag talo, talo. Kapag panalo, panalo,” said Senator Zubiri.

“In this case, nanalo yung Cambodia and I’m happy for them. We want to show that this sport is fair, our judging is fair. There’s a protest system that we’re using, we have our playback system. Makikita talaga kung panalo or talo. We let the system work. We checked it on the play back system and we had our board of jurors who checked it out at nakita talaga, panalo si Cambodian. So let’s give it to her.”

He also has a message to Yalong, who got devastated by the reversal of the decision.

“I didn’t have a chance to talk to her (Eza). Pero alam mo, ako naging atleta rin ako. Even if manalo ako at hindi mo deserved, masakit rin yun. Hindi ka makakatulog. Gusto mong lapitan yung kalaban mo at sabihin sa kanya na you won. This is martial arts. Honor system yan,” said Zubiri.

It was reported that Yalong still couldn’t believe that she lost her match against Si.

“I was not properly informed of what happened. Feeling ko ako talaga yung nanalo,” said Yalong.

“Nice to see that we Filipinos are now rooting for Timor Leste at least to have a medal, mas masaya pag lahat masaya. Southeast Asian, Walang iwanan… We win as one!” Rom Cor remarked.

Another netizen made a lengthy post to express his support to Timor-Leste saying that SEA Games is about unity and not about having competition with each other.

“Together with the thousands of Filipino sports fans, We/I salute #TIMORLESTE Athletes and all those delegates & athletes from the 10 SouthEastAsia countries who compete with their heads up high and without complaints and play with their big hearts with a smile,” he added.

“30th SEA Games is all about diversity and multi-national talents. There is no competition in between as they came on the same mission and vision so in the hearts of ALL TRUE Pinoys they are all Winners,” he also said.

Timor-Leste is the newest member of the SEA Games, only debuted in 2003, one year after it gained its independence.

In the 2017 SEA Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Timor-Leste got a total of three medals.
