Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto revealed the public service that he admired the most in a post two years ago.

On a tweet, Sotto wrote a post dedicated to the late Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jessie Robredo.

According to Sotto, he was amazed by Robredo’s style of governance and shared that the transparency ordinance he filed in Pasig City was inspired by the late Interior Secretary.

However, the Mayor said that he never met Robredo personally, but he learned many things by watching videos and reading things about him.

“I never had the chance to meet Jesse Robredo, but I’m so thankful for his life and all that I’ve learned from his wisdom & leadership, even if only indirectly through mutual friends, reading, and videos,” Sotto said.

“The Transparency Ordinance I filed in Pasig is, in part, inspired by Jesse Robredo,” he added.

He even called Naga City, the bailiwick of the Robredo’s as the ‘hotbed of citizen empowerment and participation in government’ contrary to what President Rodrigo Duterte described.

Vice President Leni Robredo also gave advice to Vico when he was elected as the Mayor of Pasig City.

She also said that they’re willing to help the Pasig City Mayor if needed.

” ‘Yung pinaka-mensahe, maraming paghihirap ang pagdadaanan. Sana mag-stay lang ng course. Maraming temptations. Maraming shortcuts na dadaanan niya, pero sana ‘yung focus parating nandyan,” Robredo told Sotto.

“Andito lang naman kami. Hindi lang ako pero lalo na ‘yung mga katrabaho ng asawa ko. Nagvo-volunteer kami kung meron siyang kailangan na tulong from us para matuto sa lessons na pinagdaanan.” she added.

Vice President Leni Robredo complained about how the government seems to focus too much on maintaining the law and order amid the community quarantine in Metro Manila instead of giving their attention to the health workers treating COVID-19 patients.

In her radio program “Biserbisyong Leni” the Vice President cited that the government should give more of their support to the health workers because the COVID-19 outbreak is a health concern and not a peace and order issue.

“Ngayon kasi, parang nangingibabaw ulit ‘yung public order and safety na dapat sana supportive lang siya sa health concern,” Robredo said.

“Sana hindi grabe ‘yung focus sa military, sa kapulisan kasi ito, health concern ito,” she added.

She also suggested that the government should create another sub-committee in the IATF-EID that will focus on the people affected by the community quarantine.

On her social media post, she also asked her followers to help the health workers by sending donations to them.

The Vice President clarified that they’re not accepting cash donations, that’s why she asked them to deposit the money to their private partner “Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership.”

Several groups also criticized the action of the government to deploy soldiers and cops during the community quarantine period.

The community quarantine in Metro Manila came into effect on March 15.

Thousands of Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) members were deployed in different locations in Metro Manila to ensure that all people that are going inside and outside of Manila are not showing symptoms of COVID-19.

According to the reports, there are 200 checkpoints placed in different entry-points of Metro Manila.

A Filipino scientist working for the World Health Organization (WHO) defended the role of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) in the fight of the government against the COVID-19 outbreak.

On a lengthy Facebook post, Ryan Jose Ruiz III shared his photos taken when he was in Africa during the Ebola outbreak in 2014, showing how soldiers helped the health workers in fighting the said epidemic.

According to him, people should not think that soldiers and cops only know how to use weapons and control civilians because they’re also knowledgable on handling other things like assisting the health workers.

“Reading vile and unfounded criticisms in social media posts about the mobilization of the PHL government of their military and the police in the implementation of community quarantine makes me share these photos and experience of mine serving emergency responses in UN missions particularly during the 2014 West African Ebola Epidemic Response,” Ruiz said.

“A lot of us, might think military and police are just “armed individuals.” Some naively think they are just there to show “power over civilians” and to use their armed status for “control.” Only a few knows that their contribution to the success of these missions are enormous,” he added.

“It is there organized nature, the chain of command, the skills in logistics, the civil operations training, quick reaction, combat awareness, indomitable spirit that actually fits the right people to do the job. So before you throw those comments that “we are fighting a virus, what’s the need of the military?”

He also cited how AFP and PNP could help the health workers who are already busy in treating COVID-19 patients by keeping law and order in the country.

“Think again, who do you think you can mobilize to:”

– move tons of medical supplies in orderly fashion with the right equipments?
– whom you can rely to build temporary clinics for epidemic so that it will not render an existing hospital closed due to overloading of patients?
– whom you can make sure that health workers can work properly without fear due to unruly crowd?
– whom you can have the confidence to make sure, orders for civilian control are fully implemented so that government response are unhampered?
– whom you can ask in crisis settings, to give up their personal responsibilities to their families to save other people families?”

He also asked the critics of the AFP and PNP to tone down as the soldiers and cops also have families.

“Remember, when you speak ill of them, think of them as someone who also have families and kids that they have to leave in others care so that they can tend on your own safety. Think of them as someone who is also equally afraid of the disease yet they have to be of service to the country.”

“Before you write those comments, articles and your opinion against them and about how useless they are in this COVID-19 response, think of what you have contributed so far for the country.”

According to him, the critics are just trying to put more reason for the government to revive the ROTC and mandatory military service in the Philippines.

“You just actually laid out a perfect example why we need to resurrect the ROTC or mandatory military service in our country and may this COVID-19 infection saves you and your family.”

The post of Ruiz already reached 2,700 shares on social media.

A few days ago, several activist groups criticized the government for ordering the PNP and AFP to preserve law and order in Metro Manila during the month-long community quarantine period.

According to them, the government should just focus on health workers instead of the military and police.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said that the government has no choice but to limit the movement of people inside the National Capital Region (NCR) as soon as possible before the COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines becomes uncontrollable.

In an interview, DILG Sec. Eduardo M. Año urged the officials of Metro Manila to cooperate with the government during the whole period of the month-long community quarantine that the government implemented this Sunday.

To convince the Manila officials, he told them about the prediction of the World Health Organization (WHO) if ever that the Philippines act slowly against COVID-19.

“We are under a public health emergency. The first time in our history. We need to act fast otherwise the WHO (World Health Organization) projects we will have 75,000 COVID cases and we do not have the resources to meet that kind of emergency; thus, the best course of action now is to stop the spread and save the lives of our people,” Año said.

He also asked religious groups to suspend their mass gatherings to avoid more possible COVID transmission.

“We urge all our religious leaders to likewise suspend their mass or worship services during the duration of the quarantine for the sake of their members,” he said.

Año also cited the said information during an interview with DZMM on March 13.

Metro Manila is now under community quarantine, several days after President Rodrigo Duterte declared a state of a public health emergency.

Under the community quarantine, domestic land, air and sea travel are not allowed in NCR.

As of writing, there are already 111 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines.

Pinay in Italy urges Filipinos to cooperate with the government: “Magsawa and mapagod na kayo sa kaka-kontra!”

A Filipina residing in Italy, the country with the second-largest cases of COVID-19 urged the people living in the Philippines to cooperate with the government.

On a viral Facebook post, Jaya Sto. Domingo said that while it’s a little bit too late, they still obeyed the Italian government when they already decided to implement a lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus.

She described their current situation in Italy as “not easy”.

“9-10K na ang infected dito sa Italy nung nag declare ng lockdown ang Gobyerno. Late na right? Pero without a word, sumunod agad lahat, walang reklamo, walang kung ano-ano. Soldiers are everywhere, kung lalabag ka, multa ka!!!” Sto. Domingo said.

“Schools are suspended, maraming nawalan ng negosyo, maraming natanggal sa trabaho! Nagkukulang na nga kami sa Vitamin D. But we are submitting to the authorities. Supermarkets and pharmacies lang ang bukas dito,” she added.

She questioned why Filipinos seem not cooperating with the government despite the fact that the Philippines acted earlier than Italy after it decided to implement a community quarantine in Metro Manila.

Sto. Domingo also addressed the youth reminding them that despite having stronger immune system, they may still become a carrier of the virus and spread it to their older family members.

“Sa Pinas, 98 persons infected, inaagapan na agad ng Gobyerno, and dami paring reklamo? Friends, hindi ko kayo ma-gets. Onting appreciation at cooperation naman dyan… Kung ma-infect tayo ng COVID-19, okay lang, kakayanin natin, pero pano nalang yung mga lolo’t lola natin?” 

She urged the Filipino to follow the authorities and avoid complaining about the actions of the government against COVID-19.

“Mahal at kapwa kong mga Pinoy, it’s not the perfect time to blame and hate. Magsawa and mapagod na kayo sa kaka-kontra at kaka-react negatively. Alam kong it’s in our blood hahaha pero, please, tigilan na.” Sto. Domingo said.

“Kung may mali and pagkukulang sila. Edi, okay. Si Lord na bahala dun. C’mon, we have a BIG God! Question is: Are you doing your part?”

Sto. Domingo made the said Facebook post after the government received criticisms from the netizens, especially from the youth.

On Friday, the Kabataan party-list, one of the groups that criticizing the Duterte administration held a rally to express their disappointment to the actions of the government.

“Lima lima lang daw po ang pwedeng sumakay sa tren, pero daan daan nakapila sa labas, napakahusay ng administrasyong Duterte, pangalawa, kumain daw po kami ng masustansya, sa hanay ng maralitang kabataan, saan ho namin kukunin ang pagkain masustansya kung aming magulang mismo ay walang maiuwi,” the activist said.

“Pangatlo, ang pinakamagaling ng administrasyong ito sa mga kabataan, sumunod daw po kami sa mga militar, sa gitna ng krisis sa kalusugan ang kailangan ng kabataan ay pag o-organisa ng mga health workers, ng mga nurse, ng mga doktor hindi ho namin kailangan ng mga pulis at mga militar,” she added.

 

 

“Wag muna pagbayarin!” Marcos wants private sectors and banks to stop charging customers during COVID-19 outbreak

Former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. asked the banks and other private companies to avoid charing their customers for a while so they could save more money amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

On a Facebook post, Marcos said that the financial institutions and companies could help the people affected by the COVID-19 by implementing “pay date suspension” in the whole period of the outbreak.

“Tayo ay nananawagan sa mga bangko at financial institutions na pansamantalang suspindihin ang paniningil ng mga mortgage payments at bigyan ng palugit ang ating mga kababayan na naapektuhan ang kabuhayan at kita sa gitna ng global epidemic na ito,” Marcos said.

“Ako rin ay nakikiusap na suspindihin ang paninigil ng bayad para sa mga utilities at iba pang mga regular na bayarin para sa mga naapektuhan ng virus, tayong lahat ay dapat humanap ng paraan upang matulungan ang isa’t-isa sa panahon ng krisis na ito.” he added.

Marcos made the statement several days after Italy stopped asking their citizen from paying their monthly bills to help them during the outbreak.

Some small businesses and families were given time off during the financial crisis before having to repay.

Italy is the second most affected country in the world by COVID, reporting 17,660 cases as of writing.

The Philippine government also raised the COVID-19 alert to code red sublevel 2 and ordered the community quarantine of the whole Metro Manila.

13-M people in Metro Manila could be affected by the quarantine.

MMDA also ordered the suspension of malls and other establishments, except pharmacies, banks and groceries.

 

KABATAAN partylist holds a rally against class suspension despite COVID-19 outbreak: “Saan niyo kami ilalagay sa panahon ng krisis?”

Members of KABATAAN party-list criticized the government for suspending the classes in all levels for one month amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines.

Despite the strong advice of medical experts to the Filipinos to avoid mass gatherings, the said group still held a rally to express their criticisms against the Duterte administration.

According to one of the activist, the administration doesn’t have any plans for the youth during the outbreak.

“Ang mga kabataan na tinatanaw niyong bilang pag-asa ng bayan, saan niyo kami ilalagay sa panahon ng krisis sa kalusugan? Sa paaralan ho ba? Hindi na ho dahil suspended na po ang mga klase. Isang buwan po na hindi na magkaklase ang mga kabataan. Ngunit ano ang problema dito? Napaaga po ang aming bakasyon. Wala man lang plano kung paano namin ipagpapatuloy ang aming pag-aaral sa gitna ng ganitong klase ng krisis,” the activist said.

They also criticized the quarantine measures of the Duterte administration, questioning that they’re not going to succeed in preventing the spread of COVID-19 with their current actions.

The video has gone viral on social media and as of writing already received 4.6-M views.

However, the Kabataan party-list seems didn’t get the support of the public as they received a tremendous amount of criticisms from the netizens.

Netizen Jeffrey Azarcon said that the members of Kabataan should not worry because they could still learn many things at home by using social media.

“Learning doesn’t just happen in the four walls of the classroom. Social media could be our platform to continue learning or shall I say online modality can be an alternative way to continue learning. Your professors are and were already instructed to find alternative ways. Also, instead of spending your allowances in other not so important things, you can use it to buy healthy foods such as veggies and fruits. Please understand what it means by “social distancing”. I am also a youth, a young professional but I don’t rant about and against the issue. Instead, I follow the instructions from the DOH on how I can prevent Covid to attack me and my family. EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD MATTERS ON HOW WE USE OUR BRAINS!” he said.

Blogger Sass Rogando Sasot also posted a reaction on the video of Kabataan, explaining that nurses and doctors are not fit to enforce law and order during the community quarantine period.

“Anong issue nito? Galit at na-suspend ang klase? GURL WAIT FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. Bakit ka ba nagmamadali? Saan ba ang lakad?! Ateng sa Italy the security forces are also being mobilised. Anong gusto mo, ang mga doctor at nurse nasa lansangan para i-enforce ang order ng community quarantine?!!?!? Gurl, anong issue?!” Sasot said.

“Nagtatanong iyong kabataan partlylist na nag-rally kung saan daw ilalagay ang mga kabataan given na na-suspend na ang klase ng 1 month. INDAY, SA BAHAY. Yan ang sagot. SA BAHAY KA LANG. San mo ba gusto ka ilagay?! Nakakalokaaaaaaa!” she added.

 

Diokno says cops have no right to detain people disobeying community quarantine: Hindi labag sa batas ang subukang pumasok sa Metro Manila

Defeated senatorial candidate Chel Diokno reminded the people that they have the right to resist the authorities if ever that they’re going to detain them because of disobeying the community quarantine measures implemented in Metro Manila.

On a series of Twitter posts, the human rights lawyer argued that any person who is only attempting to enter Metro Manila is not against the law, and the only thing that the cops can do is to prevent them from setting foot in the National Capital Region.

“Pwede ka nilang harangin at papasukin, na tama lang naman kung kailangan,” Diokno said.

He also said that cops are not allowed to detain people who are refusing to quarantine.

Diokno pointed out that “PNP cannot act on its own” citing Section 3 of the President’s Proclamation No. 922.

“[t]he Secretary of Health may call upon the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies to provide assistance in addressing Covid-19 threat.” he quoted.

“Ibig sabihin, DOH Secretary at hindi PNP ang masusunod. DOH Secretary at hindi PNP ang mangunguna. Presidente na mismo ang nagsabi nyan. The PNP can only assist the DOH,” he added.

Diokno is referring to the statement of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Regional Director Debold Sinas that they’re going to put violators of community quarantine under their custody.

However, the Department of Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra clarified that PNP could only invite the violators from the police station if they tried to do harm to the police officers.

Diokno thanked Guevarra for clarifying the statement of NCRPO.

The community quarantine of Metro Manila is set to start tomorrow.

Under the community quarantine, domestic land, air and sea travel to and from Metro Manila are not allowed.

However, workers residing in other provinces are still allowed to go inside and outside of the country’s capital as long as they’re going to show proof of employment.

A Filipina fashion design student living in Milan, Italy reminded her friends and family in the Philippines to cooperate with the government and avoid doing the same mistakes that the Italians did.

On a Facebook post of Mickaella Jorgia Bergantino described their current situation in Italy, after the Italian government ordered a total lockdown.

According to her, the people living in Italy didn’t listen to the warnings from the government until the virus spread uncontrollably throughout their country.

“Dear Family and Friends in the Philippines, Don’t make the same mistakes like we did here in Italy. Being in Lockdown means you have to STAY AT HOME and AVOID at all costs going out. No school or work doesn’t mean a holiday or you can go out with friends or meet other people. It has been proposed by the government and health officials for a purpose!” she said.

“We have been there. We didn’t listen. We continued to go out and meet people even though we were told not to. We underestimated the situation. And look where we are right now. 10k plus of infected and we are forced to stay at home,” she added.

She urged the Filipinos to avoid the mistakes that Italy did and listen to the instructions from the government so they could control the virus easily.

“Do not do the same mistakes like we did. Stay at home while you are not being forced.Do your job as a citizen. Your role in obedience will lead a big impact to the Society. It doesn’t matter if your plans are or were canceled. Your life and health are more important than that,” she said.

On another post, she also described how strict the Italian government from implementing the lockdown so the Filipinos can see a little hint of what’s the worse thing that could happen to the Philippines.

She said that the government closed all shops and malls, except grocery stores and pharmacies.

They’re also not allowed to go out without a permit or else they’re going to face charges.

“And I’m telling you that I have been at home for the past 3 weeks and it is not a good thing because Humans need to interact with each other. But because we underestimated the situation the government made drastic measures for our safety,” she stated.

“Hospitals are collapsing because of the amount of the infected people.
The Healthcare and hospitals in Italy are free, that’s one of the good things. But is it in the Philippines? The Answer is no,” she added.

Before ending her post, she reminded the Filipinos again that a “simple act of obedience can change” not just their life, but also the people around them.

“Don’t wait until the situation will get worse for the government to take drastic measures (esp how D30 mind works lol)” she said.

It’s already known to the world Italy has the second-highest case of COVID-19 in the world, and many Filipinos who are working in the said country are also badly affected by the outbreak.

As of writing, there are already 12,839 cases of COVID-19 in Italy.

A man wrote an open letter to the netizen, convincing them to pray for President Rodrigo Duterte amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

On a Facebook post, George Montiadora said that President Duterte was experiencing more stress than anyone because of the current problems facing by the country.

He pointed out that some people are trying to criticize the President for his small mistakes instead of highlighting the good things he did.

Montiodora believes that Duterte is not going to do something bad to the country because he’s old already.

“Please include our President in your prayers for our country guys. He is more stressed than anyone of us. Imagine kung paano siya sinisisi ng marami either di maganda o mabuti ung nangyayari. Sa isang puting pader na natuldukan ng itim na tinta, karamihan sa mga Pilipino doon na nakatingin,” Montiadora said.

“Guys, this man will never ever do anything na makakasama sa kahit na sino sa atin. Matanda na siya, mahina, pagod, may mga nararamdaman,” he added.

The netizen also told the social media users that they should admit that they’re feel safer in the current administration because of the policies implemented by Duterte.

“Kaliwa’t kanang pangbabatikos, pero aminin nyo, malaking relief sa atin nung siya ang naging presidente. Di ka matatakot maglakad sa kalye sa gabi kasi alam mo na may “Yari ako kay Tatay Digong” na nakatatak kahit papaano sa utak ng mga masasamang loob sa paligid,” he said.

“He chose to fight and serve for his beloved fellowmen. He never complained. He never turned his back even to those people na supposed to be partner nya sana pero walang ginawa. Yun na mismo ung punch line “WALANG GINAWA”. (di ko sinasabing vice president to ah).” he added.

Before he ended his post, Montiodora asked the netizens to cooperate with the President instead of complaining.

“You will see him get tired but you will never see him giving up. His intentions are beyond best. Inaayos nya yung bansang buong buhay nyang nakitang walang pagbabago. Sana makipag cooperate tayo. Kung di nyo kayang tumulong, wag na kayong magreklamo!!!  Laban nating lahat to. Kapit-bisig tayo Salamat Tay, kasama mo kami dito,” he said.

The post already reached 86,000 shares on social media and 107,000 reactions.

Montiadora made the said post amid the criticisms being received by Duterte to some netizens who complained about how the President delivered his televised address.

Yesterday, Duterte announced that they’re going to put Metro Manila in a community quarantine to prevent the virus from spreading.

“‘Pag hindi kayo nag-cooperate, ah the problem would start and it would start with you and end with you pagka ganun. So ‘yung mga sinasabi na social distancing, sundin lang po ninyo. At ‘yung mga ibinibigay na well ahead ng Department of Health, sundin ho ninyo kung anong sinasabi ng mga doktor kasi sila po ang marunong niyan,” President Duterte said.
