A cybersecurity analyst shared the possible reason why some GCash users lost their funds in their e-wallet.
On May 7-8, hundreds of netizens claimed that they lost their e-wallet funds due to unauthorized transactions made by still unknown individuals.
GCash quickly performed emergency maintenance and announced last Monday that they already resolved the issue.
Comedian Chad Kinis also claimed that he lost his funds and urged GCash to explain the issue to the public.
In a Facebook post, Art Samaniego Jr. who’s also an editor for Manila Bulletin said that GCash users lost their funds because of phishing.
“Lahat ng mga “biktima” nagsasabi na hindi sila na phish. Sure na sure sila na inside job ang nangyari. Yung mga lumapit sa akin, binalikan namin mga ginawa, pinuntahan at mga links galing sa mga messages nila.” Samaniego said.
He showed several photos of websites pretending to be login pages for GCash that some netizens accessed.
Some friends of Samaniego also said that it was possible that some users lost their e-wallet funds after gambling sites accessed the sensitive information of their victims.
“Yan talaga din isa sa kutob ko. Sa mga online casino and HYIP (get rich quick) sites na may gcash but iba ung domain na gamit, mukhang somehow at somepoint ung ibang victims is nakapaglogin sa ganung klaseng site and ngayon lang nagdecide magfarm yung suspect.” netizen Eli said.
“I agree, mukang nag ipon muna, problema lang sabay sabay nya ginawa kaya na-flag agad ng EastWest,” Samaniego responded.
