The first Filipina who won Miss Universe, Gloria Diaz opposed the idea of letting transwomen and mothers join the prestigious competition.
In her explanation, Gloria said that Miss Universe is not ‘Miss’ anymore if the organizers let it happen.
“My personal opinion, which is not to be taken in a negative way, dapat may sarili silang contest. May Mrs. Universe, may Lesbian Universe, may Tranny Universe,” Gloria said.
“There is room for so much. Oo, mga category na ganoon, ganyan. Tapos, kasi even sa Mrs. Universe, andaming magaganda diyan na nanganak na. Okay lang yun.” she added.
Rumors that Miss Universe would let transwomen join the competition because the owner of the organization handling the beauty contest is JKN Global Group CEO Anne Jakrajutatip a transwoman.
Diaz, who won Miss Universe in 1969 said that the proposal was still a ‘very new idea’ for her.
“Dapat kanya-kanya! At least it gives people more chances, ‘di ba? Kasi, you’re representing this country. Eh, kung may mas magandang babae, o mas magandang tranny… mas mahirap kalaban ang tranny.” she explained.
Diaz’s opinion gained different reaction from netizens.
“Alam ba ni Gloria Diaz ang lahat ng mga gamit ng salitang “miss”? Siya nga, tinatawag pa ring “Miss GLoria Diaz” sa interviews hanggang ngayon, pero wala namang pumapalag!” Ralph Sarza said.
“I agree with Gloria Diaz stance. As you can see, evil works in mysterious ways,” netizn Edward remarked.
