Eat Bulaga host Paolo Contis reacted to the decision made by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to remove the ownership of Television and Production Exponents (TAPE) Inc. on the trademark of Eat Bulaga title and logo.

On December 6, 2023, Paolo took a swipe against the decision and insisted they would still appeal the decision that might remove their rights to use the Eat Bulaga title even on their noontime show.

Paolo insisted that the decision was still not yet final.

“Magandang tanghali! Nakaputi ako ngayon, iba ang outfit-an ko ngayon pero simple lang ang gusto kong sabihin para sa ating mga Kapuso. Mga Kapuso, mahaba pa po ang laban. Ibig sabihin, legally, wala pang final. Okay?,” said Paolo.

“Pero ito lang po ang pangako namin, ano man ang mangyari, ang nasimulan po namin na tulong at saya ay itutuloy lang po namin araw-araw. Dahil ‘yun naman po ang dahilan kung bakit kami pumapasok araw-araw. Kayo po ang dahilan kaya nandito kami,” he added.

Meanwhile, netizens couldn’t hide their disappointment towards Paolo for allegedly showing his attitude on national television.

Some netizens told Paolo that he should respect the decision of IPOPHL and reminded that Joey de Leon was the one who invented the title.

It can be recalled that IPOPHL removed the rights of TAPE Inc. to use Eat Bulaga branding on their merchandise.

The lawyer of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon, Atty. Buko Dela Cruz, expressed his happiness after they won the trademark complaint they filed against Television and Production Exponents (TAPE) Inc.

In an interview with MJ Marfori, Atty. Dela Cruz said that the decision of the Intellectual Property of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) to remove the trademark rights of TAPE Inc. over Eat Bulaga branding was an early Christmas gift for them.

“Talagang tunay na maligaya ang Pasko natin dahil sinabi ngayon ng adjudicator ng IPO na ang tunay na may-ari ng markang Eat Bulaga ay ang Tito, Vic, and Joey,” said Dela Cruz.

“Panalo ang Dabarkads sa araw na ‘to,” he added.

However, the lawyer said that it would be too early to celebrate as TAPE might appeal the finding and they could still use the Eat Bulaga branding while waiting for the decision.

On December 5, 2023, IPOPHL said that TAPE Inc. failed to prove that they invented the term Eat Bulaga, which was popularly believed to have been coined by Joey.

According to the decision, Joey was the one who suggested the title ‘Eat Bulaga’ to the former chairman of TAPE Inc., Romeo Jalosjos Sr. and the latter approved it.

Former SB dancer Rochelle Pangilinan received different reactions from the netizens after she decided to appear on the revamped version of Eat Bulaga.

In her Facebook post, Rochelle explained why she agreed to become a guest of Eat Bulaga despite the legal battle between her former colleagues, Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon against TAPE Inc. that currently handling the noontime show.

According to her, she waited for months before she accepted the invitation in respect to her former colleagues.

“Twenty-eight years ago, ako unang tumuntong sa stage ng Eat Bulaga. Trese anyos pa lang ako nun pero naalalala ko pa yun hanggang ngayon. Nung lumipat ang TVJ at ang original Eat Bulaga hosts sa TV5, tulad ninyo, naapektuhan din ako at nasaktan,” she said.

“Sa araw na ito, aapak ako uli sa entablado ng Eat Bulaga. Iba na ang mga karakter sa paligid pero ang excitement at saya na nararamdaman ko ay tulad pa rin ng dati – sabik ako laging mag-perform nun sa Eat Bulaga kasama ang TVJ at ang dabarkads, sabik pa rin akong sumayaw sa bagong Eat Bulaga kasama kayo.

“Bilang pagtanaw ng respeto sa Eat Bulaga, TVJ at original Dabarkads,
pitong buwan ang pinalipas ko bago pa man ako nangahas makapasok man lang sa bagong Eat Bulaga.

“May takot. May pag-aalinlangan. Pero kumakapit ako sa paniniwalang dahil gusto ko lang i-share ang talento kong ibinigay niya, ako ay tatanggapin ninyo.

“Nagpasintabi po ako sa original Eat Bulaga hosts and management bago ako umabot sa puntong ito. Magpapasalamat na rin ako sa mga aksamayan ko dati at naunawaan nyo ang pag guest ko ngayon,” she said.

However, not everyone favored the explanation made by Rochelle.

“Basta ako loyalty ang importante sa akin,” netizen Einna said.

“Hindi ako nanonood ng FAKE Eat bulaga, Solid TVJ here, nadaanan ko lng ito dito, Ah ganun ba? Tinanggap ang alok dahil Gustong ipamahagi ang talento o dahil sa Pera? Alam mo Ms Rochelle lahat na naging part ng TVJ inaalok ng fake bulaga para asarin ang EAT TVJ,” netizen Mimi wrote.

TVJ Productions released several posts amid the victory gained by their company against Television and Production Exponents (TAPE) Inc.

It can be recalled that TAPE Inc. lost its trademark rights over Eat Bulaga branding after the Intellectual Property Office (IPOPHL) found that the Jalosjos-owned company couldn’t explain how it should own the title of the longest-running noontime show.

On X, the production company owned by Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon posted a tweet to their fans after the decision was released.

Netizens expected that TVJ would release a public statement tomorrow about their next steps to finally gain the full rights to use the Eat Bulaga title.

The decision of IPOPHL only covered the use of Eat Bulaga in merchandise and print materials and not the use of the title on television.

However, some experts believed that the victory gained by TVJ would also give them an advantage to win the copyright infringement case they filed against TAPE Inc. to finally stop the production company from using the Eat Bulaga title.

E.A.T director Pat Plaza couldn’t hide his happiness after the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) removed the trademark rights of Television and Production Exponents (TAPE) Inc. for Eat Bulaga title and logo.

On December 5, 2023, Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon won a major win amid their legal battle against the Jalosjos-owned company after IPOPHL ruled that TAPE failed to convince them why they should become the trademark owner of Eat Bulaga.

Pat who’s also one of the former directors of Eat Bulaga posted a photo of the whole crew of E.A.T as his response to the victory.

It can be recalled that TVJ, together with other former staff of Eat Bulaga, left GMA Network and formed a new noontime show titled E.A.T.

After the decision, TVJ fans were hoping that the trio could now finally use the title Eat Bulaga again.

However, TVJ still needed to win the copyright infringement case they filed against TAPE Inc. before they finally legally owned Eat Bulaga title.

IPOPHL only removed TAPE’s right to use Eat Bulaga in merchandise.

As of writing, TVJ and TAPE have yet to release their reaction to the decision of the court.
