Television and Production Exponents (TAPE) Inc. published a document to prove that they’re the rightful owner of Eat Bulaga trademark until 2033.
In a Facebook post by Bored Productive, they showed the photo of the Certificate of Renewal of Registration filed by TAPE Inc. on June 14, 2023.
According to the document, TAPE registered the ‘Eat Bulaga’ and ‘EB’ titles including its logo.
The document was signed by Jesus Antonio Z. Ros, the director of the Bureau of Trademarks.
Joey de Leon also registered Eat Bulaga title under his name before the Bureau of Trademarks.
It can be recalled that Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon didn’t focus on claiming the trademark of Eat Bulaga, but they wanted to claim the ‘copyright’ of the artistic elements of the longest-running noontime show.
TVJ and Jenny Ferre filed a copyright infringement case against TAPE on July 12 before the Marikina Regional Trial Court to prevent the production company from using Eat Bulaga title and its segments.
Atty. Buko Dela Cruz, the legal counsel of the legendary trio said that there were big differences between copyright and trademark.
“Mas malawak ang copyright, ang trademark limitado.. Yung copyright hanggang mamatay ka plus 50 years sayo ‘yun at hindi mo kailangan magparehistro, basta ikaw ang lumikha,” he explained.
“‘Yung trademark, ginagamit mo sa negosyo so kailangan mong i-register ‘yung trademark para walang ibang makagamit sa produkto, sa merchandise. Pero ‘yung copyright sa isang nilikha mo, ikaw lang ang may kapangyarihan magpagamit non at kung gagamitin ng iba ay dapat i-acknowledge ka man lang,” he added.
