The Mayor of Rodriguez, Rizal, suggested that his constituents upgrade their houses to two stories to avoid the effects of the flood.

In an interview, Mayor Ronnie Evangelista said that residents should accept that flooding will be a regular occurrence in their town, since its location serves as a flood basin.

He explained that several rivers surround the area, which makes the flooding worse.

Evangelista insisted that his constituents were capable of upgrading their houses and that the local government couldn’t afford to shoulder his suggestion.

“Ang usapan namin dito, sila na mismo ang magpapagawa ng bahay nila, gagawin nilang two-storey,” said Evangelista.

“May pera na rin ‘yang mga ‘yan. Kasi, alam ko kung gaano karami ‘to? Two thousand plus to. Hindi kakayanin ng LGU,” he added.

Meanwhile, Evangelista insisted that the quarrying operations in their town were not the cause of the flooding, claiming that Rodriguez was already flood-prone even before the mining companies arrived at the area.

“Yeah, contributor ang quarry sa ganito. Unang-una, may putik—pero sasabihin mo sa pagbaha? Even without quarry kasi binabaha naman kami,” he said.

Evangelista’s suggestion was not received well by the residents, and some even told the mayor on social media that it would be his last term.
