Legendary Filipino basketball player and Comedian Rosalio “Yoyong” D. Martires passed away on June 18, 2024, his family confirmed.
In a Facebook post, Moby Leah Martires announced his father’s passing at 77.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Rosalio “Yoyong” D. Martires. He peacefully joined our Creator yesterday, June 18, 2024. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement read.
“He lived a very adventurous and colorful life. A loving husband, a doting father, a caring grandpa, a self-made man, an Olympian, a prolific basketball player, a comedian, a devoted public servant, and a child of Christ. Difficult steps to follow, indeed,” she added.
Martires was known for portraying a loud-mouthed character and sidekicks of leading actors like Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon.
One of his famous lines was when actors often asked him if he was angry due to his loud speaking voice, to which he would quickly respond with the lines “Hinde, nag-e-explain lang.”
Before he became a comedian, Yoyong brought honor to the country by playing on the last Philippine basketball team to play in the Olympics.
Netizens expressed their condolences to the Yoyong family.
