Dani Barretto, nilinaw ang kanyang pahayag tungkol sa mga magulang na pinapaalala ang ‘utang na loob’ sa mga anak nila

Dani Barretto went viral on social media after she shared her opinion on some ‘toxic’ Filipino parents who obligated their grown children to support them financially.

In an interview, Dani, the child of Kier Legaspi and Marjorie Barretto, said that children should not feel required to help their parents.

“Hindi ka puwedeng magkaroon ng utang na loob sa isang bagay na dapat nilang gawin para sa’yo, kasi there are some people who use that against people, parang, ‘Pinaaral kita, pinaganito kita, ganyan-gayan… so, dapat ito yung binibigay mo sa akin.’” she stated.

Dani received criticism from some netizens, saying that it was already part of the Filipino culture that children would give back to the people who supported them.

She then clarified that she didn’t urge the netizens to stop helping their parents.

“This is just my opinion, kung hindi man tayo pareho ng pananaw, nirerespeto ko po yun,” she said. “I never said na huwag kayong magi-give back sa pamilya niyo, na huwag ninyong susuportahan ang pamilya niyo, or huwag kayong maging mabuting anak at i-spoil sila.

“Whatever you said in the comment section, I never said that. Ang opinyon ko po is that giving back should be voluntary, not obligatory. Yun lang po ang opinyon ko, hindi ko po sinabing mag-agree kayo o dapat yun yung sundan niyo,” she added.

She also stood firm with her statements, calling the parents requiring their children to help them ‘toxic’.

“Yung statement lang po na yon is about those parents who still obligate or require their children to give money to them. And kung di po sila bigyan, sinusumbatan po sila ng mga responsibilidad na ginawa nila para doon sa mga anak nila.” she said.
