Former Senator Leila de Lima couldn’t hide her happiness after the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 206 granted De Lima’s motion for reconsideration so she could post bail for her charges.
On November 13, 2023, De Lima was seen emotional after she heard the court’s decision.
The court set the bail for 300,000 pesos.
“Sa wakas, makakalaya na po ako. For years, my whole being has been crying out for justice and freedom. For more than six long years, I’ve been praying, praying so hard for this day to come,” said De Lima.
“Napakasakit ang makulong ka na wala kang kasalanan, at ayaw ko pong mangyari ito sa iba. But I don’t want to be sad or bitter today. This is a moment of triumphant joy and also thanksgiving,” she added.
It can be recalled that De Lima was put behind bars due to the accusations that she allowed illegal activities inside the national penitentiary during her time as the Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary to fund her campaign.
She was put under the custody of the authorities in 2017.
As of writing, former President Rodrigo Duterte, the chief executive during De Lima’s detention, has yet to give his comment on the court’s decision.
