Davao City suddenly went viral on social media amid the destruction caused by the Southwest Monsoon in Metro Manila and different parts of Luzon.
The social media trend began when some netizens started labeling the flooded areas in Metro Manila and Luzon as Davao City.
Several content creators and netizens, including Dr. Richard Mata, labeled some flooded areas in Luzon and Metro Manila as part of Davao City.
Some even asked the public to pray for Davao City even if the photos were taken in some areas in Luzon.
It was believed that the netizens’ remarks were a reference to a possible investigation into the flood control projects in Davao City, despite claims that floods are more common in Luzon and Metro Manila.
Several days before the trend started, Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro also labeled Davao City as flood-prone in her response to Vice President Sara Duterte’s criticism.
“Doon po sa nagsasabi na lubog na ang bansa sa baha, totoo naman po. Kitang-kita ito sa Davao City,” said Castro.
In another statement, Castro also said claimed that the flood problem in Davao City was severe and the government was preparing to solve it by building flood control infrastructures.
