Several netizens couldn’t hide their regret that Rhenz Abando didn’t get enough playtime during the FIBA World Cup held in the country.
It can be recalled that Rhenz was one of the top scorers of Gilas during their only win in the tournament against China.
According to netizen Atiya, Gilas Pilipinas might not have been winless in their first four games if coach Chot Reyes had given more playtime to Abando in their previous games.
“Imagine if Chot Reyes started with him plus Jordan Clarkson. Gilas Pilipinas would have qualified for the Olympics,” said the netizen.
“Rhenz Abando won this Game. Jordan Clarkson won this Game Not Chot Reyes. If he started w/ Rhenz Abando. The Philippines wouldn’t be down 1-4,” he added.

Abando also received praise from other netizens.
“Rhenz Abando may not be the top scorer for this match but we cant deny that his performance and spirit tonight made all the difference. See how that energy and drive can turn the table,” netizen Kwitanai wrote.

“Better ball movement and better defense. Plus giving Abando more playing time made the difference tonight. That defense, hustle, and athleticism that he brings to the court gives Gilas so much energy that turned into plusses at both ends of the floor,” netizen Felix stated.
The win by the Philippines against China reversed the opinion of the public on the Philippine National team and boosted the morale of its players to continue their attempt to reach the Olympics via Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT).
