Sen. Binay on ABS-CBN: “Naiintindihan ko ang mga reklamo against ABS-CBN, but mas mahalaga iyong freedom of information”

Despite not yet being investigated or grilled in the Senate, ABS-CBN will get support from Senator Nancy Binay on their franchise renewal.

In an interview, Binay said that the problems of ABS-CBN may get a fix.

“Kung may problema lang naman doon sa franchise, nacu-cure naman iyon through amendment. So pinakamagandang pag usapan ay ano yung mali,” said Binay.

According to Binay, it’s their job to talk about the problems on the franchise of ABS-CBN and she’s not in favor of letting the broadcasting company wait until its expiration in March 2020 without getting through the right process.

Binay then said that despite having problems with ABS-CBN before, she’s still ready to support the franchise renewal of the broadcasting network.

She believes that the freedom to information is more important than the complaints filed against ABS-CBN.

The Senator also considered the affected workers of the possible closure of the network.

“This is not about me, naiintindihan ko rin naman iyong mga reklamo against ABS-CBN, but mas mahalaga iyong freedom to information and access to information, pag nasara itong ABS, malaking dagok doon sa access natin sa information,” said Binay.

In the past, the family of Sen. Binay faced a nationwide coverage about their alleged corruption and believes that television networks like ABS-CBN were mistreated them.

On Monday, Solicitor General Jose Calida filed a quo warranto petition against ABS-CBN before the Supreme Court.

Calida cited illegal activities committed by ABS-CBN, like not paying taxes, issuing Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs) to foreigners and also launching pay-per-view service to its subscribers.

The franchise of ABS-CBN is set to expire in March 2020, and as of writing the petitions to renew broadcasting company are still not being discussed.
