Several Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) still showed their support to President Rodrigo Duterte in the middle of the campaign rally of the opposition senatorial bets Otso Diretso at Central District in Hong Kong yesterday.
In a video uploaded by OFW Joy Nerie, it showed several Filipina workers who were present at the same place where Otso Diretso is doing their campaign chanted ‘Duterte’.
The chant became louder when the five candidates of Otso Diretso were introduced to the OFWs.
President Rodrigo Duterte is popular among OFWs in Hong Kong.
Otso Diretso candidates, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, Marawi civic leader Samira Gutoc, former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay, election lawyer Romeo Macalintal, and former congressman Erin Tañada were present during the event.
Vice President Leni Robredo and actress Agot Isidro were also there to show their support to the opposition candidates.
A political analyst already said that Otso Diretso is only wasting their time in trying to convince the OFWs in Hong Kong to support the opposition.
According to an analyst, Hong Kong is already considered a bailiwick of Duterte who’s visiting the said Chinese special administrative region once a year.
“I think overseas Filipinos have already made up their minds even before the campaign period has begun. The wooing, ‘yung panliligaw sa OFW, dapat that should happen even before the campaign period. If you reach out to them now, most likely they are just going to say why only now?” Ateneo Policy Center Senior Research Fellow Michael Henry Yusingco told ABS-CBN news in an interview.
