President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday revealed the qualifications that he wanted for the next Ombudsman that would replace Conchita Carpio Morales who’s set to finish her term on July 26.
According to Duterte, the next Ombudsman would be male and not a politican. He didn’t elaborated why he preferred a man.
“Mag-nominate sila, pero I choose, but gusto ko ‘yung bilib ang tao sa integrity niya. Of course it could not be a politician, lalo na hindi babae.” Duterte said.
He also said that he would not consult the outgoing Ombudsman despite of their close relationship.
“I will have to consult everybody. I will even have to consult the Ombudsman people, not Morales,” he said.
Meanwhile, Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Martires and Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III submitted an application to become the next Ombudsman.
The application was accepted by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) for review.
Solicitor General Jose Calida was also being eyed as candidate according to a source. However, Calida was not interested to become an Ombudsman.
